The Guide to Investigation of Mouse Pregnancy is the first publication to cover the mouse placenta or the angiogenic tree the mother develops to support the placenta. This much-needed resource covers monitoring of the cardiovascular system, gestational programming of chronic adult disease, epigenetic regulation, gene imprinting, and stem cells. Offering detailed and integrated information on how drugs, biologics, stress, and manipulations impact pregnancy in the mouse model, this reference highlights techniques used to analyze mouse pregnancy. Joining the ranks of much referenced mouse resources, The Guide to Investigation of Mouse Pregnancy is the only manual providing needed content on pregnancy in animal models for translational medicine and research. Provides instruction on how to collect pre-clinical data on pregnancy in mouse models for eventual use in human applications Describes the angiogenic tree the mother’s uterus develops to support pregnancy and the monitoring of pregnancy-induced cardiovascular changes Educates readers on placental cell lineages, decidual development including immune cells, epigenetic regulation, gene imprinting, stem cells, birth and lactation Discusses how stress, environmental toxicants and other manipulations impact upon placental function and pregnancy success
Comparative Anatomy and Histology: A Mouse and Human Atlas is aimed at the new mouse investigator as well as medical and veterinary pathologists who need to expand their knowledge base into comparative anatomy and histology. It guides the reader through normal mouse anatomy and histology using direct comparison to the human. The side by side comparison of mouse and human tissues highlight the unique biology of the mouse, which has great impact on the validation of mouse models of human disease. Print + Electronic product - E-book available on Elsevier's Expert Consult platform- through a scratch-off pin code inside the print book, customers will be able to access the full text online, perform quick searches, and download images at expertconsult.com Offers the first comprehensive source for comparing human and mouse anatomy and histology through over 600 full-color images, in one reference work Experts from both human and veterinary fields take readers through each organ system in a side-by-side comparative approach to anatomy and histology - human Netter anatomy images along with Netter-style mouse images Enables human and veterinary pathologists to examine tissue samples with greater accuracy and confidence Teaches biomedical researchers to examine the histologic changes in their mutant mice

Never before has there been such a comprehensive book of protocols. This compendium offers a full range of research techniques-from cell culture, to biochemical, to microscopic and genetic. More focused books, like Cold Spring Harbor's Manipulating the Mouse Embryo, are similar though more narrow in scope. This book will appeal to a broad range of researchers, from basic experimental scientists to clinical and animal scientists.
This fourth edition of "The Mouse Manual¨is once again the definitive reference source on mouse development, transgenesis techniques, and molecular biology. Its preeminent authors Richard Behringer, Marina Gertsenstein, Kristina Nagy, and Andras Nagy have reorganized and updated this edition to include new information and protocols on: · generation of induced pluripotent stem cells · RNA microinjections · lentiviral microinjections and infection · assisted reproduction techniques for sperm and embryo cryopreservation · isolation, generation, and transplantation of spermatogonial stem cell lines · in utero electroporation of gene constructs into postimplantation embryos · vibratome sectioning of live and fixed tissues for imaging thick tissue sections · whole-mount fluorescent staining methods for three-dimensional visualization Recombinant DNA techniques and methods for studies of mouse embryonic development have been updated from previous editions, as has the wealth of information on mouse laboratory strains, mouse housing and breeding, surgical procedures, assisted reproduction, handling of embryos, and micromanipulation setups. The first edition of this classic work appeared more than 20 years ago, with authors that included Brigid Hogan, Rosa Beddington, Frank Costantini, and Elizabeth Lacy. The field's technological sophistication has grown exponentially but the manual remains the essential practical and theoretical guide for all students, lab technicians, and investigators who work with mice.
Infection with the influenza virus can have a serious effect on the health of people of all ages, although it is particularly worrisome for infants, the elderly, and people with underlying heart or lung problems. A vaccine exists (the “flu” shot) that can greatly decrease the impact of influenza. Because the strains of virus that are expected to cause serious illness and death are slightly different every year, the vaccine is also slightly different every year and it must be given every year, unlike other vaccines. The Immunization Safety Review committee reviewed the data on influenza vaccine and neurological conditions and concluded that the evidence favored rejection of a causal relationship between influenza vaccines and exacerbation of multiple sclerosis. For the other neurological conditions studied, the committee concluded the evidence about the effects of influenza vaccine is inadequate to accept or reject a causal relationship. The committee also reviewed theories on how the influenza vaccine could damage the nervous system. The evidence was at most weak that the vaccine could act in humans in ways that could lead to these neurological problems.
