When Theo Griepenkerl happens upon the fifth Gospel in a war-torn Iraqi museum, he can’t believe his luck. Driven by greed and a lust for fame, he capitalises on his find by publishing it. His book is a sensation. But he can hardly imagine the incendiary consequences his discovery will have for Christians, Arabs, homicidal maniacs and Amazon customers alike. The Fire Gospel is a brilliant piece of storytelling, dazzlingly outrageous and utterly gripping.
In this masterful combination of theological satire and book-world farce, the bestselling author of The Crimson Petal and the White allows his storytelling talent free rein. Theo Griepenkerl is a scholar of ancient languages, grudgingly resigned to a life of obscurity. Then, on an artefact-finding mission to Iraq, he 'rescues' some Aramaic scrolls from a bombed museum and smuggles them home to Canada. Translating furiously, Theo reveals the work of a scribe called Malchus: an early Christian and a contemporary of Christ himself. It is a fifth gospel that gives an all-too-frank eyewitness account of the Crucifixion. It could have incendiary implications for the faith of millions. But in the meantime Theo Griepenkerl has a publishing sensation to promote... By turns comic, thought-provoking and shocking, The Fire Gospel, another title in the International Myths Series is a celebration of human fallibility that will delight Faber fans old and new. Michel Faber has written six previous books, including the novels The Fire Gospel, Under the Skin and The Crimson Petal and the White. He has won several literary awards, among them the Neil Gunn, Ian St James, Macallan and the Saltire First Book of the Year Award. Born in Holland and brought up in Australia, Faber now lives in the Scottish Highlands. textpublishing.com.au 'This highly entertaining recasting of a Christian myth is witty and intelligent...Highly recommended.' Canberra Times 'This is a man who would give Conrad a run at writing the perfect sentence.' Guardian 'Manages the difficult task of being a hugely entertaining narrative about our depthless human capacity for stupidity, hatred and greed...Faber is a beguiling entertainer.' Geordie Williamson, Australian 'An entertaining story, with a vein of playful symbolism running throughout...A provocative little volume with a strong element of knowing humour. Its most strikingly mischievous feature is that, while it appears at first to be a satire on religious extremism, at root it is a satire on the book business, the pliable nature of readers and the egotism of authors.' Financial Times
An outstanding book on prayer and the spiritual life written by one of the best spiritual directors of our time. Dubay synthesizes the teachings on prayer of the two great Doctors of the Church--St. John of the Cross and St. Teresa of Avila--and the teaching of Sacred Scripture.
"[The author] lays out the principles necessary for effective evangelism, showing how God operates through anyone who is willing to follow His plan."--From back cover
To the unstudied eye, St. Matthew's gospel can seem a terse narrative, almost a historical document and not the tremendously spiritual (and doctrinal) storehouse that it is. In his third volume of meditations on Matthew (chapters 19-25), Erasmo Leiva continues to show Matthew's prose to be not terse so much as economical--astoundingly so given its depth. The lay reader can derive great profit from reading this. Each short meditation comments on a verse or two, pointing to some facet of the text not immediately apparent, but rich with meaning. Leiva's work is scholarly but eminently approachable by the lay reader. The tone is very much of "taste and see how good the Lord is" and an invitation of "friend, come up higher!." The goal of the book is to help the reader experience the heat of the divine heart and the light of the divine Word. Leiva comments on the Greek text, demonstrating nuances in the text that defy translation. He uses numerous quotes from the Fathers and the Liturgy of the Church to demonstrate the way the Tradition has lived and read the Word of God. His theological reflection vivifies doctrine by seeking its roots in the words and actions of Jesus.
"The efforts made by YMCA secretaries, as the administrative officers were called, to apply social gospel ideas to China's political, social, and cultural environment provides a unique perspective on the history of cross-cultural interaction, or rather collisions, between the two countries born of different civilizations. While the influence in this case ran mainly in one direction - from the United States to China - the implications flowed in two ways, especially for the YMCA secretaries as field workers. The process of implanting the American social gospel into the Chinese setting involved negotiations, confrontations, and amalgamation along a whole range of different cultural norms and values on the scene, including the indigenous Confucianism, Chinese nationalism, and international communism. The YMCA leaders' cross-cultural experiences transformed their own understanding and interpretation of the Christian mission and their own cultural identity as a result of their interactions with the cultural forces in China." "The export of benevolence and the spread of American dreams is a recurrent theme in American history. The social gospel experience not only forms an important chapter in the history of Sino-American cultural relations, but also bears important contemporary implications. It may show that many Americans have yet to learn that American society is pluralistic, and that differences in color, religion, and political beliefs must be tolerated. Also, in view of the recent escalation of international reformism and the call for exporting the American dream, it is important to know that Americans cannot Christianize the world after their own images, for every culture has its own share to contribute to an interdependent world community in the twenty-first century."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
